I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now, been working up the courage to buy the materials and start. Just got a sketchbook, the speedball starter, and the small plastic speedball ink jar. I was feeding my kids breakfast when I had an idea of something to sketch for my first sketch, and got started yesterday. I was struggling so much with making ANYthing look right. One of the subjects in the sketch is a crow, so I unsurprisingly found this video that I had yet to watch. I have not taken any real art classes, nor have I made much art at all, just the generic stuff in a high school art class. I have understood volumes and gradients fairly well as I have gotten into miniature painting, but I hadn't realized there were foundational practices for scaling the subject, which will help me tremendously moving forward. I sketched/erased the feet of the crow a countless number of times. I am also having to realize that I try to go too big when I start things and burn myself out with the size of the task at hand. I probably need to do more foundational sketches over and over. Thank you for this.

i wish my process was like this. but like any other artist out there, mine is more like: 1- starts with an idea 2- then sketches 3- then criticizes myself 4- give up 5- do something else.

Oh, how I wish dip pens would be more popular where I live. There’s literally like 1-2 stores in the entire country that I know sell any dip pen nibs (even then like 2-3 different types lol) I can’t really afford the mailing/shipping fees if I were to place an order online either 😂 (I’m lucky that mom found a super cheap pen set that’s suitable for drawing when on a solo trip. Now I at least get to practice with something) Oh! And this is the video that got me into seriously trying to get one! I’m so glad that there are content creators who make these kinds of informational videos. ❤

I love this era and that you do master studies. I guess the internet makes me feel like copying an older, inspirational artwork for exercise is inappropriate for posting, but thinking about it as a master study puts it in perspective.

For sure, and what's nice about these studies is that you can apply what you liked about your learnings into your own works, or dismiss what's not a good fit for your style. I think studying a variety of masters takes us places we wouldn't have otherwise considered.

Oh, I loved this video!! Thank you so much for showing how you use fineliners and brushpens. It is incredibly useful. I bought some quills and nibs just to do your Udemy course, but my Gooooosh! Am I having a hard time learning how to use them. My line quality and precision with fineliners is ok, but once I changed to nibs it totally went away, and that has been so frustrating. Could you please one day do a video on how to achieve line width variation using fineliners please? I saw you achieving it here, and it looks amazing. Thank you so much for your work. I love your channel.

Hi! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this video and took my course. True, there is a shift in method, how we draw when using dip pens versus other inking instruments, though the results are well worth persisting through the learning curve. David Finch does a great job of demos using fine liners and brushpens, if you haven't already checked him out yet. Thanks for being a fan of my channel, I appreciate it!

Great copies. Thanks for making me discover Joseph Clement Coll. Please stick to dip pens. Fineliners are nothing but millions of tons of plastic waste per year, polluting and contributing to global warming (manufacture and disposal). Dip pens = multiple usage metal nibs, wood holders, ink in glass bottles. Learn the craft, it only takes a few weeks and provides so much more pleasure and satisfaction. An alternative is fountain pens (piston-filling, hard or soft nibs, very long life).

Such a great video. I was always wondering about the technique of the golden trio, as it is so unique and distinct. Their strokes being bold but precise. Yet they convey so much. All of that without a reliance on contours. As I'm reading and practicing throughout Guptills book they are certainly one of my inspirations, (I'm not a patient renderer) Edit: they also remind me of some pencil based rendering techniques that I really enjoy. Though with pencil you can get away with so much more in terms of stroke amounts

Hi there, thanks for watching the video. It's true that writing instruments have evolved, just like everything else in life. As for inking tools, dip pens of today offer a broader range of flexibility-rigidity, and great drawing inks for contemporary illustration - compared to what artists used in the Golden Age. Have a second look at dip pens, this article goes into details of which nibs are best suited for your drawing style: longstrideillustration.com/best-dip-pens-for-drawing/

Wow that was a very nice video! You condensed pretty much all the most meaningful information in a few minutes, bravo! I'll share my own (hopefully useful) tips : 1 I also clean the nib, before dipping it again in ink, but in plain rubbing alcohol, instead of water (I did a small research and apparently that is what is used to melt shellac, which is the binder of the ink, so, in theory, it should work the best for cleaning) 2 After use, I clean the nib again with rubbing alcohol, then I apply a thin layer of lean oil (linseed or almond, I've also used baby oil 😂) using a puff of cotton. Then I close the nibs inside a tin box together with one of those silica gels (up cycled from some electronics packaging). Never had rust this way! 3 Before use, I clean the nib again with white vinegar (learned this from Shane Patrick White) 4 To make the ink a bit more flowing, it is better to use a few drops of Windex, or similar, instead of distilled water (again learned this from the master SPW) Again great video and congratulations for your progress so far! PS I want to steal your cat!
